The building is positioned parallel to the slope’s contour lines to minimize the emerging volume above terrain and therefore to maximize the view towards Lake Millstatt. While the building’s main functions orient south-west towards the lake, the driveway and the garage are located north at the site’s highest point. The simple and compact volume reacts to the steeply inclined plot as two multilevel organized floors are embedded into the landscape. To reduce the perceivable building height as well as the view from the adjacent buildings, the local authorities could be convinced to implement a pitched roof rather than a gable roof, originally defined by the building regulations.Viewed from the lake, the rather flat roof and the generous glazing makes the building appear transparent and restrained in comparison to the massive retaining walls and high gable roofs of the surrounding.
